Painting Lesson: Owl!

Today we were painting Acrylic paints on canvas. We learned a little about the owl.

  • Barn owls mate for life. They cuddle with their mate and babies. When one mate dies, the other one becomes depressed and might even die too.
  • Owls can’t move their eyes. They must turn their heads to see.
  • Over 200 types of owls live on the earth.
  • Owls  can turn their heads almost completely around.
  • The color of owl’s feathers helps them blend into their environment (camouflage).

You will want to see this video! If only for a few minutes. It is seriously way way to sweet, it makes me want my own little owl. So precious!

The kids have really loved having the last couple lessons be in painting. There is something so exciting when you dab your brush into a tray of glossy fresh paint and spread it across a clean white canvas.

The best quote I had from this lesson was by an 8 year old girl. She sighed and said ” I was born to do art” Then the other kids chimed in “me too” they said. It was a great moment!

I wanted the kids to see that realism can still be abstract. So the owl was broken up into colors. The head wings and breast were all a color of their choice.

We drew the owl face first. Then they painted a background color then started working on the wing colors. Finishing up with the white zentangle designs.

We were cracking up because one of the kids just happened to wear a cute owl shirt to the lesson! We had to get a picture of that!

I dream of painting and then I paint my dream.
